Dear South Dearborn Community,
We are writing to share important information and provide clarity regarding the discussion about the future of Manchester Elementary School. As your school district, we value transparency, empathy, and collaboration with all members of our community — especially in times of change.
This discussion was prompted by several pressing challenges that our district is currently facing. Most notably, Manchester Elementary, along with other schools in the district, is experiencing declining enrollment. This trend has had a direct impact on how we allocate resources and maintain programs that benefit all students.
In addition to enrollment declines, we are confronting significant capital project needs at Manchester Elementary. These are not small or cosmetic updates, but critical infrastructure concerns that require substantial funding to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
Compounding these challenges is the recent passage of Indiana Senate Bill One, which is expected to result in a loss of $1.5 million in revenue over the next three years. This legislation places further strain on our already limited financial resources, making it even more important that we use our funding as strategically and equitably as possible across the district.
During a recent meeting, the superintendent and members of the administration had the opportunity to sit down with a delegation of concerned citizens who identified themselves as representatives of the Manchester Township. We deeply appreciated their willingness to engage in open, honest dialogue, and we want to emphasize that we heard their concerns. We approached the conversation with empathy and a genuine commitment to listening. We hope we were able to answer questions thoughtfully and provide insight into the difficult decisions we face.
If the Board decides to move forward in this direction, we are committed to developing a thoughtful and comprehensive plan that considers multiple factors, including student transportation, class sizes, and building utilization. Our ultimate goal is to provide every child in South Dearborn with a high-quality, consistent educational experience — no matter which school they attend.
To ease the transition for any students affected by these changes, we will be hosting open houses this spring. These events will give students and families the opportunity to tour their new school buildings, meet teachers and staff, and begin building connections within a new school community. We understand how important it is for children to feel safe and supported, and we will work hand-in-hand with families to provide peace of mind during this time.
We ask for your support and unity as we face these challenges together. We must see ourselves not as separate communities, but as one united school corporation — proud to stand together as Knights. When we rise above individual township identities and work as one, we can build a stronger, more sustainable future for all students in South Dearborn.
We thank you for your continued partnership, patience, and understanding.
With appreciation,
The South Dearborn Community School Corporation Administration

The featured staff member of the week is Mr. Derrick Mann. He graduated from Bishop Brossart High School in Alexandria, Kentucky. After high school, he attended Ivy Tech, where he earned two associate degrees—one in PC support, and the other in administration and networking. Eight years ago, Mr. Mann began working with Five Star as an IT support technician, serving South Dearborn Community School Corporation. Within the last year, he officially joined our school district as a full-time employee, serving in the role of IT support.
Mr. Mann recently celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary. He and his wife have two children. For fun, he enjoys spending time with his family, attending Cincinnati Cyclones games, completing construction projects, and doing tech repairs on the side. A fun fact about Mr. Mann is that his cross country team won the state championship during his senior year of high school. We are so grateful for his nearly decadelong dedication to supporting our students and staff!

Future engineers were hard at work in Mrs. Shackleford’s sixth-grade classroom at Aurora Elementary School. Students used VEX robot kits to build and program their own robots, applying problem-solving and critical thinking skills every step of the way. Once their robots were complete, they faced off in a friendly competition to test the strength, precision, and effectiveness of their designs—bringing STEM learning to life through creativity and collaboration.

It was Congress 101 in Ms. Warren’s third-grade class at Manchester Elementary School as students began reading “How Congress Works” by Phillip Jackson. They explored the roles of the House and Senate, comparing their responsibilities and procedures. Through thoughtful analysis of the similarities and differences, students gained a deeper understanding of the foundational structure of our government including how laws are made.

South Dearborn High School students took a closer look at the integumentary system—our skin, hair, nails, and glands—with Mrs. Gilb. Using microscopes, they examined slides of human skin, focusing on sweat and oil glands. Through this hands-on activity, they explored how these structures regulate body temperature and maintain hydration. The lesson highlighted just how much our skin does to protect and support the body. 🔬

The SDHS Prom was awesome last night! Our students had such a good time! I didn’t have the heart to tell them that they were getting down to music from my college days 🤣 I had the best dates to prom (my wife and son). I am blessed to have a family that is invested in the SD Community! I want to give a huge shoutout to Mrs. Michelle Ballart and Mrs. Tammy Dixon. They (and their team) do an amazing job of putting this together for our students. Way to go! - Supt. Ross #SuccessDriven #GrowExcelAchieve
