Bill Lane is a 1989 graduate of South Dearborn High School and currently serves as Vice President of the South Dearborn Community School Corporation School Board.
Mr. Lane was recently named Ivy Tech Community College’s 2016 Southeast Region Alumni of the Year, an award designated for individuals who have made a positive contribution to the community or Ivy Tech through leadership and/or volunteering. Mr. Lane says he is particularly proud of being recognized by Ivy Tech because he once struggled in school during his early years. “I didn’t do very well because I didn’t really try,” he said. Upon entering the Marine Corps after graduating high school, he learned that “not taking things seriously could be a disaster. I was a very stubborn kid who hated school work and really had no interest in college.” Once his time with the Marine Corps was finished, he enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College where he obtained an associate’s degree in business management. He then went on to Indiana University East where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He currently serves as the communications and network services manager for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
When asked how South Dearborn Community School Corporation has changed since his days as a student, Mr. Lane said, “We now have far more opportunities for our students, including dual credit and college credit available to our high school students. Some can even obtain an associate’s degree before they graduate from high school.” He said the recent partnership between South Dearborn and Ivy Tech has provided an even better college credit program than ever before. Mr. Lane also noted that the increase in cutting-edge technology has created a better learning environment for all students, with iPads, computers, and laptops being the new normal in classrooms. He stressed the updated security in all South Dearborn Community School Corporation buildings, along with the fact that they are constantly improving and updating school facilities to make them the safest they can be for students.
Mr. Lane was very certain that one thing has not changed since his days as a student at SDCSC: the dedication of the teachers and administrators. He said, “I’m proud of the job they do, and the time they put in so that their classes, buildings, and activities exceed the students’ expectations.”
